It was founded by the Byzantine emperor Alexios  Komnenos around the end of 11th Century. According to legend, the monk Isaiah miraculously healed the daughter of Emperor and in return requested the Icon of Virgin Mary. The Icon remains half covered as it is said that whoever looks upon the icon will go blind. Kykkos monastery is also the resting place of the first president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios and the area is a popular destination for visitors.
